Bahir Dar
Perched on the shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest stretch of
water, Bahir Dar is the gateway to the Blue Nile falls, the lake
itself and many sights beyond. An attractive town with tree-lined
avenues and modern shops, Bahir Dar is the commercial and tourist
centre of North Western Ethiopia.
Lake Tana itself is a deep blue expanse of water some 73km long,
dotted with dozens of islands, many of which are home to
monasteries, churches and spectacular bird life.
30 km south of the city, the mighty Blue Nile Falls are a powerful
sight. The sheer force of the water passing over the 45 m high
cliff creates an unforgettable experience.
